About the Triad, North Carolina Area

The "Triad" or "Piedmont Triad" is a geographical region of North Carolina in the central Piedmont that consists of the area centered around the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. It extends its reach east into Alamance County and the growing city of Burlington. The area is connected by Interstates 40, 85, 73, & 74 and is served by the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Long known as one of the primary manufacturing and transportation hubs of the southeastern United States, the Triad is also an important educational and cultural region and occupies a prominent place in the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. The Triad is not to be confused with the "Triangle" region (Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill) about an hour's drive to the east. As of 2007, the Piedmont Triad has an estimated population of 1,535,926 making it the 30th largest CSA metropolitan area in the USA.

The primary counties in the Triad are Guilford and Forsyth plus western Alamance.

The greater Triad region includes 9 other more rural counties, among them- Caswell, Davie, Davidson, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.

WINSTON-SALEM: Population 203,259 Located in Forsyth Co.
Winston-Salem, a medium-sized city, is built around its historical roots in Old Salem. Winston-Salem features many cultural programs through the NC School of the Arts, Symphony, Little Theater Guild, and the Arts Council. The educational opportunities include Wake Forest University, Babcock Graduate School of Management and Wake Forest Law School, Winston-Salem State University and Forsyth Technical Community College. Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Medical Research Centers through North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Brenner Children's Hospital care for patients from throughout the southeast. Winston-Salem is recognized for its medical centers. Positioned for future growth, Winston-Salem represents a diversity of corporate management, manufacturing and many other business opportunities. Winston-Salem offers much for both the family interests and the single person. The young family life style is very pronounced in Winston-Salem and yet there are many who feel that Winston-Salem is the perfect place to spend their retirement years.

The Moravians, a group of artisans founded Salem, one of the earliest planned communities in 1766. These artisans opened sawmills, breweries, and tanneries, and the town grew and prospered. In 1849, settlers of Quaker and European descent, located just north of the Salem settlement, founded Winston. The two cities were merged by the postal service, of all things, by the simple combination of the Winston and Salem post offices and a hyphen placed between their names on the new postmark in 1899. The hyphen became permanent in 1913 when Salem and Winston joined and the "Twin City" of Winston-Salem emerged.

Since that time, Winston-Salem has grown to be an area known for its diversity of business and community, a strong and unwavering commitment to the arts, excellence in healthcare and technology, many opportunities for specialized and advanced education, and a high quality of life with a low cost of living. Winston-Salem has been ranked in the Top Ten Most Technology-Advanced Cities in the country by the Center of Digital Government for the third year in a row. One service that has helped Winston-Salem place third this year is "WiFi on Fourth" a high-speed wireless zone along Fourth Street allowing access to anyone with wireless capabilities.

You could shop till you drop and still not exhaust all of the opportunities for browsing and bargain hunting in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Options range from the 1.8 million-square-foot Hanes Mall - the largest mall in the Carolinas - to the specialty shops and boutiques in the beautiful and historic Reynolda Village, part of a sprawling estate also featuring an art museum, restaurants and beautiful gardens. Such attractions draw shoppers from as far away as Virginia to the area, which is also home to many shopping centers housing a wide variety of national and regional retailers.

Winston-Salem boasts a full array of dining options - from convenient, quick-stop eateries to traditional family-style establishments to sophisticated international cuisine and everything in between. Downtown, neighborhood grills, close to shopping areas, everywhere you look you'll find a tempting dining establishment.

Whatever your interests, there's plenty to do and see in Winston-Salem: minor league and college sports, popular recreational destinations, festive nightlife, a thriving arts community, fascinating historical sites, and fun events that spice up life here throughout the year.

Many major areas don't boast the range of cultural opportunities available in Winston-Salem, which has earned its reputation as a city of the arts through strong community support. Cultural appreciation is fostered through the city's array of museums and living history centers, and artistic pursuits are encouraged through year-round dance, music, and theatre productions that cater to virtually all ages and skill levels.

The National Business Employment Weekly has ranked the Winston-Salem area fifth among the top ten big cities for starting a career. The city's low cost of living and attractive quality of life have made it a magnet for new businesses and young professionals eager to pursue a career and start a family. Winston-Salem's variety of neighborhoods and metropolitan convenience has caused retirees to embrace Winston-Salem as well.

Low unemployment, a pleasant year-round climate, an excellent transportation infrastructure, and a strong commitment to arts and culture, make Winston-Salem among the top 20 cities in the nation for high quality of life.

HIGH POINT
: population of 97,796 Located in Guilford Co with portions in Davidson

High Point is a destination of choice for those seeking the cultural, recreational, educational and occupational opportunities it offers in abundance. This Triad community is large enough to offer dynamic lifestyle, but small enough to be your home town. Proud of its manufacturing heritage, High Point is well positioned to prosper in the 21st century as a vibrant, modern city. Come see diverse neighborhoods where you'll find the best of old world craftsmanship coupled with all of today's modern conveniences.

High Point is generally regarded as the Furniture Capital of the World and North Carolina's International City due to the bi-annual High Point Furniture Market that attracts 100,000 exhibitors and buyers from around the world. High Point is located at the highest point of the 1856 North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro where it intersected the 1852 Great Western Plank Road. It was incorporated in 1859. Before it became a major manufacturing center, the most important industries were tobacco, woodworking and textiles. The first of many High Point furniture factories was opened in 1889.

Whether it's a castle born from the area's gold refining heritage or a 19th century Quaker Plantation, High Point offers something for everyone. You can explore the regions rich history, distinctive cultural events and diverse recreational activities. Oh, and don't forget the shopping. High Point offers more than 70 retail furniture outlets. If you prefer outdoor fun, how about a picnic at Oak Hollow Lake or a hike at the Piedmont Environmental Center. You can also enjoy an evening at the theatre, local concerts by the lake and festivals at the park

JAMESTOWN: Located in Guilford Co.

Jamestown is a lovely historical community nestled in the greater Triad area of North Carolina. It offers a village atmosphere complete with brick sidewalks and main street shopping. The community is often considered a "bedroom community" for both Greensboro and High Point. It is a residential haven offering the best of the new and the quality and charm of times gone by. Jamestown offers an excellent quality of life including numerous outdoor recreational activities.

Jamestown was named for James Mendenhall. The Mendenhall's founded the Town of Jamestown in 1816. They built a meeting house in Jamestown and a school nearby. Other schools followed including Jamestown Female College, a Law School, Coffin Medical School, Fling Hill School, Oakdale School, Jamestown Elementary then later Lucy Coffin Ragsdale High School and Millis Road Elementary. Jamestown became an incorporated municipality in 1947 with Tom Ragsdale, Sr. as mayor.

Jamestown has grown a lot since those early days. However, it has kept its small town charm with friendly people and friendly merchants. A strong sense of family and community is still present. Jamestown enjoys a low tax rate. Also, Jamestown has the highest per capita income and highest average housing in an 11 county region. Jamestown's oldest industry is Oakdale Cotton Mill. During the Civil War guns were manufactured in this plant. Jamestown is resolute to its history with the town's oldest building being the Mendenhall House built in approximately 1800.

OAK RIDGE:
Oak Ridge, NC features some of the most luxurious homes in the Guilford County/Greensboro area while maintaining a community atmosphere and wholesome family experience. Prestigious homes are typically situated on an acre or more far enough from areas of employment to enjoy fresh, clean air, but close enough for a short commute. Incorporated in 1998 in northwest Guilford County, to quote News & Record writer Daniel Nonte, the town "finds itself at a crossroads between a rural past and an increasingly suburban future...more and more cars drive the country roads that wind past...weather-beaten barns." This idyllic community also has a rich past. The Oak Ridge Easter Horse Show has been a prominent yearly event for the past 55 years. The Old Mill of Guilford still stands and operates as a genuine water mill, and Oak Ridge Military Academy established 150 years ago continues to operate in that capacity.

STOKESDALE and BELEWS LAKE:
Stokesdale, located in the northwest corner of Guilford County, is a rural community with a mixture of agricultural and farming areas, businesses, industries, and residential areas. A small business district provides services for the citizens of the area. Several industries are also located within the Town. The 21.4 square miles included in the incorporated area of the Town is intersected by three major highways, US Highway 158, NC Highway 68, and NC Highway 65. Part of the Town borders a fourth major highway, US Highway 220. With this network of roads, Stokesdale citizens are within a short drive of the larger cities of Greensboro, High Point, Winston Salem, or Reidsville.

Belews Lake, a Duke Power facility, is located mostly in Stokes County but does extend into Forsyth, Rockingham, and a small portion of Stokesdale (Guilford County.) The lake was completed in 1973 and has a surface area of 3,863 acres and approximately 88 miles of shoreline. There are two public boat landings that provide access to the lake. The Piney Bluff access area is located on Highway 65 just outside of the Stokesdale Town Limits. The Pine Hall boat landing is in Stokes County off of Pine Hall Road. Carolina Marina and Humphries Ridge Campground are two privately operated businesses located on Belews Lake that provide boating access for the lake.

SUMMERFIELD:
Summerfield prides itself on being "respectful of the past and focused on the future." One of the Triad's most affluent communities, Summerfield is pure country elegance and a destination of choice for many native citizens and newcomers alike. Much of the housing is recent and custom built and thus full of modern conveniences. The area's Parade of Homes tour always has numerous stops in Summerfield. Until recently the town was a small northern country neighbor to Greensboro. Within the last ten years the area has been discovered for its rolling open and wooded landscape as well as it's great family atmosphere.

With excellent schools, places for children to play and adults to relax, Summerfield is an exceptional community. Recently named as one of "North Carolina's fastest growing towns", Summerfield is rising to the challenges of such growth. The turn of the Millennium saw the completion of the Brittian Building restoration and the rebirth of Summerfield's Community Identity.

Summerfield continues to be a tranquil community with a rich heritage. There are many horse farms and training facilities, area golf courses and nearby lake recreation.
